Fees

Canadian credit card fees explained

Know which annual, foreign-currency, cash-advance, balance-transfer and late-payment costs to compare.

Annual fees are only one line

An annual fee can be worthwhile when benefits and rewards exceed the cost for your actual spending. Include supplementary-card fees and the value of benefits you would otherwise buy, not marketing values you would never use.

Transaction fees can be easy to miss

Foreign-currency purchases, cash advances and balance transfers may add a percentage or fixed charge. Interest may also start on a different date than it does for ordinary purchases.

A $0 fee does not mean a $0 cost

Interest is usually the largest cost when a balance is carried. Compare borrowing rates first if you do not expect to pay the full statement balance each month.
