Using a credit card to build credit in Canada
Build a reliable payment history while keeping balances manageable and applications deliberate.

Payment history comes first
Pay at least the minimum by every due date. Automatic payments can reduce missed-payment risk, but you should still review statements for errors and maintain enough money in the payment account.
Keep borrowing manageable
A credit limit is not a spending target. Keeping balances low relative to available credit and paying the statement in full when possible helps control interest and demonstrates manageable use.
Apply selectively
Each issuer sets its own approval criteria. A secured or student card may offer a more suitable starting point than repeated applications for premium rewards products.
